Hot Melt Coating Line for Manufacturing Adhesive Labels

MWES provided an adhesive coating manufacturer with a hot melt coating web handling machine for producing labels with pressure-sensitive adhesives to withstand harsh environments.
The Challenge
Mass-producing labels for harsh outdoor environments is a challenge especially when dealing with frost or UV exposure. To do so requires a hot melt coating layer application to the substrate by pre-melting the desired material and then cooling it thus solidifying the layer. To achieve this a firm that specializes in coatings came to MWES to produce a web handling machine that would allow them to apply a PSA hot melt coating to a number of different types of materials.
The Solution
MWES designed a custom web handling machine with two unwind spindles, an infeed pull nip, a die coater backing roll, a chill roll, a laminating roll and a final rewind spindle. The machine is powered by a Bosch-Rexroth IndraDrive AC Vector Drive. The coating is applied with a Nordson Coating System. The system is controlled by a Bosch-Rexroth PLC with an HMI touchscreen for the main operator control station.
The final system can handle a web (material) width of 27 to 40 inches and a line speed of 50 to 500 FPM. The system can receive and produce a roll that weighs up to 2,500 lbs.
Impact to the Customer
The hot melt coating machine that MWES provided our customer allowed them to coat many different materials such as paper, film, liners and even metalized products. Our custom-designed web handling machine allowed them to rapidly produce any number of adhesive products that would hold up in harsh environments.
